What is the “Sake Bowl” of Tenshudo, the ultimate sake cup created for the enjoyment of sake?

The way it should be, calculated backwards from the new era of sake

Takeyasu Shojima created this sake bowl together with artists from Karatsu, Shigaraki, Iga, and Seto. Many of the sake breweries that are leading the new era of Japanese sake, such as Shinmasa Sake Brewery, have adopted sake bowls as their official drinking vessels. From left: Katsunori Sawa, 154,000 yen; Kentaro Murayama, 198,000 yen; Makoto Yamaguchi, 38,500 yen; Takashi Tanimoto, 52,800 yen (all from Tenshudo)

That’s what you’ll be doing when you enjoy the finest sake at a restaurant. But think about it. What kind of container is used to pour sake? Today, most sake is served in wine glasses, and sake brewers take pride in their craft, putting literally their entire lives into their efforts. Many sake fans have probably felt the itch to see their passion for sake poured into a Western glass.

The challenge to resolve this discomfort was taken up by Takeyasu Shojima of Sumiyoshi Shuhan, one of Kyushu’s largest local sake specialty stores. In pursuit of a sake cup that maximizes the characteristics of the new generation of sake, which has been evolving at a dizzying pace in recent years, and allows the sake to be enjoyed in the most balanced and harmonious state, Mr. Shojima devised a new style of sake bowl that combines the large size of a sake cup with the creativity of a tea bowl. He commissioned popular artists from all over Japan to create these bowls, and succeeded in realizing them.

Mr. Shojima assures us that this is the highest quality form of sake drinking vessels. This is the highest quality sake drinking vessel for enjoying the highest quality sake.
