Loro Piana’s ‘Resilient Threads’ project, which conserves the Mongolian grasslands vital to the cashmere ecosystem, marks its first anniversary

Loro Piana, the Italian luxury fashion house belonging to the LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) Group, participates in the biennial UNCCD (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification) COP17 (Conference of the Parties). This Convention is the only legally binding international agreement on land issues. Its purpose is for the 195 signatory states to promote sustainable management and conservation, protect soil from over-use and drought, mitigate the impacts of climate change, avoid conflicts over natural resources, and contribute to the prosperity of local communities. As part of this commitment, Loro Piana—for whom raw materials of the highest quality are essential—launched ‘Resilient Threads’ in 2025, a project designed to support Mongolia’s grasslands and the cashmere ecosystem, and has recently celebrated its first anniversary. Operating its only spinning mill outside Italy in Ulaanbaatar, the country’s capital, the company supports the maintenance of a sustainable supply chain of exceptional quality. By forging long-term relationships with local cooperatives and collaborating with skilled herders and nomads, it has created a virtuous cycle in fibre sourcing. Furthermore, the company is committed to avoiding harvesting in areas at risk of deforestation and desertification, and to restoring 5 million hectares of natural habitat by 2030.
